There is nothing more thrilling or chilling in the state of New Mexico than the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa.
You will find an adrenaline rush just off of the old Route 66 east of Albuquerque. You can either ease into the water or take full advantage of the diving platforms that sit above the crystal clear water.
Why Stop by the Attraction?
Divers come from all over just to visit the small swimming hole.
Though the swimming hole is only 80 feet in diameter on the surface and 130 feet in diameter beneath the surface, it is 80 feet deep. The body of water gets its name from its bright blue waters that are clear enough to provide visibility of up to 100 feet.
The water is able to remain so clean and clear because it renews itself every six hours from its underground water source. This is one of the main reasons divers are so attracted to the unique source of water in the middle of the desert.
Another distinguishing feature of the Blue Hole, is the temperature. The temperatures remains constant at 62 degrees fahrenheit all year long. While it is certainly chilly, it is not difficult to adjust to the temperature to enjoy a nice swim. If you are a person who likes to dive right into things, there are a few diving platforms built into the sides of the water hole.
I strongly recommend jumping in off the lower diving platform before diving off of the rock ledges. It is a cold swim back to the stairs to get out of the water!
As if you needed any more reason to stop by this beautiful, natural feature, there is no cost to take a swim. It is completely free to jump in and cool off from the New Mexico heat. This is great for people who have been spending a lot of time and money traveling on Route 66 or for families in New Mexico looking for a nice way to spend an afternoon. The only cost associated with the Blue Hole is if you are interested in obtaining a scuba diving permit for $20.
If you are a scuba diver, you will not want to pass up the opportunity to dive in this unique body of water.
You will have to obtain a permit and sign in before diving, but the Blue Hole offers many features to enhance your diving experience. You should visit the Blue Hole’s website for more information regarding the cost, the permit, and pertinent information to make your dive safe and successful.
Diving in the Blue Hole is one of the coolest things I have ever done, and it will surely leave you with an adventurous tale to tell your friends when discussing your travels. It is not difficult to find, and if you are on a strict road trip schedule, it does not take long to get to and from.
There is no reason you shouldn’t stop at the free attraction. The breathtaking color and unique features are something you will remember for a lifetime.
